Caribbean Map Project:

Example of map detail from my map                                 Example of map detail from the iQue3600 Basemap

Current Map Coverage:

The maps cover from 7 to 27.66 degrees North and 59 to 90 degrees West. The non-island land masses are included mainly for reference. The entire coverage area has at a minimum the same level of road detail as Garmin's basemap or Worldmap. This data is from NIMA's VMAP0 database. Some other areas such as parts of Central America, parts of South America, Aruba, Bonaire, and Curacao have data from NIMA's VMAP1 database. This database is much more detailed than the VMAP0 data, but it is still far from residential street level detail. The area from 18 to 27.66 degrees North and 59 to 90 degrees West also has some general nautical data from the NGA Digital Nautical Charts (DNC's), however my maps should NOT be used for marine navigation. The topographic contours are at 5 meter intervals and were generated from raw SRTM data (unless otherwise noted), all contours 15 meters and below were filtered out to save quite a bit of manual work getting rid of all the contours from the waves. The coastline data that I used is a little off in most places, I did use the correct datum & projection for the data. I will clean up the coastline data for an island when I add the other detail for that island.

My objective is to eventually create road maps with topographical information for all the Caribbean islands, possibly with auto routing information. I will fill in more detail such as roads, lakes, streams, reefs, airports, etc. on an island by island basis. Any island that I plan on visiting in the near future will take precedence to the others, so if you really want me to complete all the detail of a particular island, then feel free to send me airline tickets and hotel vouchers for that island. :)

Japan:

Overview                                                                        Toyama Bay area

This map covers all of Japan south of 42 degrees north latitude (all areas except Hokkaido island). This map was derived completely from NIMA's VMAP1 database. It could use some tweaking since I threw it together in a couple of hours. Download version 1.3 released 10/06/2009.

For a detailed map of central Japan see Makoto Endo's website. There are also a few maps at the MapCenter site (see link at bottom of page).

Antarctica:

Overview

This map covers from -60 to -89 degrees south latitude. This map was derived completely from NIMA's VMAP0 database.

How to make your own maps:

Download tutorial on how to create your own MapSource compatible maps that can be downloaded to your GPS using the 24k quads freely available from the USGS. The tutorial gives step by step instructions on how to create the above map of Crater Lake in Oregon.

Download "Features Test" map v1.1. Contains all the different features you can use in a map. Useful to see how each feature appears in MapSource and
in different gps receivers.

Fun Stuff:

I created these two 3D images of Guadeloupe using a program called 3DEM. The first one was created using SRTM elevation data with a raster map as the overlay. The second one was created using SRTM elevation data and a Landsat7 satellite image as the overlay. The view is off the west coast north of Basse-Terre, you can see St. Claude on the hill on the right. The peak in the middle is La Citerne.

This is a Landsat7 image of  the south west coast of Bonaire. You can see the salt evaporator ponds at the bottom, the airport runway in the middle, the town of Kralendijk at the top, and the south shore of Klein Bonaire on the top left.
